Upcoming traditional music events

sunshineJune is one of my favorite months in Vermont. Mostly because it’s the start of summer. The grass has turned green, flowers have bloomed, caterpillars have turned to butterflies and I can finally leave the house without a warm jacket.

It’s also my favorite time of year because it’s the start of festival season. A time where I can combine my two favorite things: enjoying the outdoors and playing (or listening to) music. And there is no shortage of music in our fine little state -especially traditional music.

Here are a few upcoming concerts and festivals worthy of your attention:

June 17: John Blake Concert
John Blake is a traditional Irish flute player, guitarist, pianist, producer and sound engineer. He’s known as one of the finest accompanists in traditional Irish music.  He has performed with some of the greats including John Carty, Paddy Glackin, Liam O’Flynn and many more. He recently released a solo flute album called The Narrow Edge and will be performing music from it at this concert.

Visit Champlain Valley Traditional Arts for tickets and information.

June 19: Dublin in Song and Story with Tom O’Carroll: Fund Raising Concert
Dublin born folklorist, folk-singer and instrumentalist Tom O’Carroll brings a wealth of stories, humor, wit and history to his performances. He has played at concerts, festivals, colleges, libraries and pubs all over the U.S. and Canada, as well as his native Ireland, including a stint for one month in Seoul, South Korea. Whether playing a plaintive air on the tin whistle or singing and playing rousing traditional songs to the accompaniment of the guitar or the bodhrán (Irish drum), Tom will captivate all with his lively program of Irish culture.
