Nollaig na mBan: Women’s Christmas Covid-Style

January 6 is the final day of the 12 days of Christmas. In Ireland, this day is known as Nollaig na mBan or Women’s Christmas. The day was intended to be a reward, a day off from all the housework the women did during the Christmas season. Traditionally men were supposed to take over the housework while the women rested and gathered together informally.

Last year I was fortunate enough to celebrate with some of Vermont’s finest women in the Irish music community. This year, although we cannot gather in person, we can still honor the day, honor the women in our lives, and look forward to celebrating together next year.

In the meantime, here are some photos from last’s year’s celebration (Thanks Hilary!):

Cheers to Women’s Christmas or as they say in Ireland, Slainte!
